Then read the planI'm Jake Browne. I've lived in Denver since 2002, the last stretch of it on the Northside near Regis, where my wife Sam and I rent.
I grew up the only kid of a single mom in Iowa, tagging along while my mom Deb cleaned houses and hung wallpaper. My first politics was a living-wage campaign in Cedar Rapids as a teenager. My history teacher Mike Cervantes gave me a dose of Howard Zinn and taught me how to protest.
I became a culture writer and an event producer. I was The Denver Post's marijuana critic at The Cannabist when legalization was brand new, and at Westword I wrote about the people who make this city run, including a whole series on Denver's bartenders.
Then I spent a decade producing events: nine years running operations for a statewide cannabis competition, and co-founding a hard seltzer festival along the way. Staff, weather calls, angry neighbors, tight budgets, a whole lot of regulations. It's work where things either function or visibly fail, with no press release to hide behind.
That's the experience I'm offering, not a resume of boards and endorsements. I've run event operations for a decade, and my test for government is the one I used at work: Did the thing get done?
Why run at all
Because Denver keeps talking about working people while pricing them out, and because I think a campaign should have to prove it can do useful things with money before it gets public power. This one will, in public, with receipts. If the receipts don't convince you, vote for someone else. The work happens whether or not I win.
